British lawmaker Rupert Lowe sparked controversy with a post on his official X account, criticising the use of Bangla sign at a London Underground station.

‘This is London – the station name should be in English, and English only,’ Rupert Lowe wrote on February 9.

He added, ‘I wonder whether your constituents in Dover and Deal would approve of having Bengali signs plastered around parts of their capital city. I suspect not.’

The lawmaker also shared an image of the Whitechapel Station sign, which features both Bangla and English.

In a quick response, billionaire US business tycoon and X owner Elon Musk simply said, ‘Yes’ endorsing Rupert Lowe’s stanch.

Some users supported the MP’s stance, while others criticised Rupert Lowe, arguing that having signs in multiple languages is not problematic.

One user commented, ‘Isn’t it the same as having signs in English in other countries like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and even China and Japan?’

Whitechapel, located in East London, is home to the largest Bangladeshi community in the UK, and many street signs in the area are written in Bangla along with English.
